What Is The Bitcoin Halving?

The Bitcoin halving is a process that reduces the number of new Bitcoin generated by the network every 210,000 blocks, or roughly every four years. This event is referred to as the halving or halvening, and it is a key feature of Bitcoin's monetary policy.

The monetary policy of Bitcoin is designed to mimic the scarcity and value of precious metals like gold. By reducing the number of new Bitcoin generated by the network, the halving helps to control inflation and ensure that the supply of Bitcoin remains limited.

How Many Bitcoin Halvings Have There Been?

There have been four Bitcoin halvings so far. Each of them reduced the number of new Bitcoin a miner receives as a reward for adding a new block to the Bitcoin blockchain.

  • 1st halving (28 November, 2012): reward dropped from 50 to 25 BTC
  • 2nd halving (9 July, 2016): reward dropped from 25 to 12.5 BTC
  • 3rd halving (11 May, 2020): reward dropped from 12.5 to 6.25 BTC
  • 4th halving (19 April, 2024): reward dropped from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC
